Launched in 1996, Barclays SiteSavers is
the UK’s leading community environmental
regeneration programme. In partnership with
local communities, it reclaims derelict land
and turns it into playgrounds, gardens, parks
and sports grounds. By the end of 2000, the
scheme had supported over 250 projects and
transformed the equivalent of 600 football
pitches – including planting 25,000 trees.
A further 200 schemes will be completed by
the end of 2001. As part of understanding just
what makes a successful community, Barclays
SiteSavers has also been funding research into
the social impact of this kind of scheme.
